How to be a 5 Star Airbnb Guest

Airbnb has been around for awhile, but a lot of people are still unsure of what to do when they are guests in Airbnb rentals. Airbnb doesn’t offer a lot of guidance for how to be a good guest, so we’ve compiled some basic guidelines that you can follow to assure that you have a good stay and get good reviews from your hosts.

Because the Airbnb system works entirely on a peer review system, so it’s important that you receive good reviews from hosts. Without good reviews, your future booking requests may be turned down.

Read the Entire Listing and Follow All the Rules

This is critical when you’re sharing the space with your hosts. You should treat the stay as if you were staying at a friend’s house and not like you are staying at a hotel. If you’re sharing a bathroom, don’t spend 2 hours in the shower and getting ready in the morning before your host has to leave for work. It’s important to communicate with your host to make sure that both of your expectations are being met.

Hosts take time to write very detailed listings about their properties and it is well worth your time to read the entire listing before requesting to book the property. Make sure that all of the information in the listing matches up with your goals for your stay. For example, if the listing says “Washer and Dryer in unit, but not available for guest use,” don’t plan to do laundry during your stay.

Once you agree to stay at a property, make sure that you pay attention to all the rules in the listing and in any material provided in the space. Hosts write the rules for a reason and do not look favorably on guests that ask to change or bend the rules that they’ve laid out.

Communicate with Your Host

Starting from the first time that you contact your host to ask if their property is available, you should be honest, friendly, and forthcoming with the details and expectations for your stay. Make sure that you let your hosts know when you’re arriving (and that you ACTUALLY arrive at the time you say) and if you will be arriving later or earlier than the time you initially communicated to them.

If you are sharing the space with your hosts, communicate with them about your schedule, if you are going to be using shared spaces, and if you are planning to invite anyone to their house.

Be Clean

Hosts are much more likely to give you a good review and be happy with your stay if you keep their space clean and well taken care of. This doesn’t mean that you have to make your bed everyday (although that probably wouldn’t hurt), but try to keep your things tidy. If your shoes are muddy, take them off before walking through the house, clean up any messes that you make in the kitchen, etc.

Basically, treat their house better than you would treat your own.
